Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Pulau Pinang began its journey in 1954 in Kota Bharu. It was then known as Penang Teachers’ Training College. In the same year, it moved to its current location in Bukit Coombe Gelugor. The name changed to Malayan Teacher Training College later.
In 1957, it was renamed Malayan Teachers’ College. People also knew it as Maktab Perguruan Persekutuan. Dato’ Abdul Razak, the Acting Prime Minister, officially opened MTC on May 14, 1959.
A significant upgrade occurred on May 11, 2006. The institute became an Institut Pendidikan Guru. In 2009, it adopted its current name, Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Pulau Pinang.
