The Institut international pour la Francophonie was inaugurated in 2014. It is part of the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 and the Université de Lyon. This institute replaced the Iframond. Iframond was created in 2001.

The Institut international pour la Francophonie strengthens its academic activities. This includes the Master of Science in Political Science. It also includes International Relations with a focus on Francophonie. Five university degrees are offered. There are summer universities and MOOCs. Research is conducted via the E.A. Francophonie. This network includes 17 chairs worldwide.
