Did the ground beneath your feet ever feel… restless? Here at the Institut für Geodäsie und Geoinformation (IGG), that’s not just a philosophical question. The IGG was founded in 2006. It merged independent geodetic chairs and institutes into one powerhouse of earth science. The institute’s nine working groups cover a vast spectrum of geodesy. They’re spread across five buildings on the Poppelsdorf campus and another location in Bonn. The IGG isn’t just about maps and measurements. It’s about understanding how our planet breathes, shifts, and changes. This institute offers two distinct engineering degrees: Geodesy and Geoinformation (B.Sc./M.Sc.) and Geodetic Engineering (M.Sc.). These are some of the few engineering programs available at the University of Bonn. The Institut für Geodäsie und Geoinformation is a key player in groundbreaking research. It contributes to climate research, environmental monitoring, and even the creation of global reference systems. Think about it: the very coordinates that guide our GPS systems, the data that helps us predict sea level rise, all have roots in geodesy. The IGG’s work extends to land use management, property markets, urban and regional planning, and ecosystem services. It also delves into the development of sensor systems for precision agriculture and robotic systems. The Institut für Geodäsie und Geoinformation is part of the Faculty of Agricultural, Nutritional and Engineering Sciences. It also collaborates with the Geoverbund ABC/J. This is a partnership between the Universities of Aachen, Bonn, Cologne and the Research Center Jülich. The IGG stands at the intersection of technology and our planet’s future, using cutting-edge tools to explore the world around us.
