The Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology a place of groundbreaking research. Imagine its inception in 1927 a visionary project born from a donation by Edmond de Rothschild. This wasn’t just another research center. This was the brainchild of Jean Perrin a Nobel Prize winner in Physics. He saw the limitations of compartmentalized university research. He wanted to foster interdisciplinarity. He wanted to create a new breed of researcher. Researchers dedicated to exploring the physico-chemical processes of life. This was the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique or IBPC.

The IBPC was unique. It was the first scientific institution employing full-time researchers biologists physicists and chemists. All dedicated to expanding knowledge. Perrin’s concept was truly revolutionary. It foreshadowed the National Centre for Scientific Research established a decade later.

The IBPC thrived. Its departments and laboratories evolved throughout the 20th century. It became a hub of research units involving the CNRS and various universities. In 1997 the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation transferred responsibility to the CNRS. Today the IBPC is led by a research federation. It houses several research units under the CNRS’s Institute of Biological Sciences and the Institute of Chemical Sciences. These units are linked to prominent Parisian universities.

The IBPC stands true to its multidisciplinary mission. It investigates the fundamental aspects of life. It explores the structural genetic and physico-chemical bases of living organisms. It studies them from the molecular level to entire organisms. The Institute welcomes the global scientific community. It encourages curiosity-driven research in a free intellectual environment. It stands as a member of the Foundation Pierre Gilles de Gennes. It actively collaborates with research institutions on Montagne Ste Genevi`eve. The IBPC’s legacy is one of innovation collaboration and a pursuit of fundamental understanding of the living world. It continues its pioneering spirit. Its commitment to groundbreaking science echoes through the halls of this remarkable institution. Its story is one of progress and discovery a testament to human ingenuity. A story written in the language of science. A story you’re experiencing today right here at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique.
