“Relatively non-bureaucratic” might be a surprising phrase to hear in France but it is true. It applies to registering a family for homeschooling and passing the Inspection Académique. This is our focus today. The Inspection Académique plays a crucial role in France’s educational system. It oversees departmental educational services. Before 2012, it was known as the inspection académique.

The Inspection Académique ensures the quality of education. It manages school organization. It also handles staff, especially in primary schools. The Inspection Académique deals with schooling, student life, and exams. Since 2021, it also integrates youth, engagement, and sports services.

The Inspection Académique is led by an academic director. This director is also a regional pedagogical inspector. They implement government policies. They also oversee primary and secondary schools. However, their role is limited in lycées. Regional councils have more power there. They also have no involvement in nursery schools. Local councils manage those.

The Académie supervises school standards. However, IGAENR primarily inspects schools and higher education. IGAENR stands for L’Inspection générale de l’administration de l’éducation nationale et de la recherche. This body also publishes reports on educational development.

For homeschooling, the Inspection Académique ensures children receive adequate education. There are two annual compulsory visits for homeschooled children of school age. One is a home visit from the mayor. The other is the Inspection Académique itself or controle.

The mayor’s visit is a quick check. It ensures acceptable living conditions. The Inspection Académique varies based on the child’s age. It differs for junior school up to 11 years old and secondary school 11 to 16 years old.

Regardless of age, a sample of the child’s written work is required. For children under 11, there is an informal meeting. It involves the child and parents with the Département de l’Education Nationale. The meeting lasts about half an hour. The teacher might ask the child questions.

For older children, the Inspection Académique takes place at a local school. They meet four different teachers for half an hour each. This involves a more formal assessment. Subjects include French, math, history, geography, and a foreign language.

At the end of the evaluations, you receive a report card. It includes comments from each teacher. The Inspection Académique is a useful way to compare your children to others. It highlights areas to focus on. Homeschooled children do not have to follow the French national curriculum. This can make it difficult for teachers to test them.

The Rectorat of the Académie de Paris is in the Academic Palace of the Sorbonne. The Rector is responsible for the educational system. The post of Rector was created by Napoleon I. He divided France into Academies. The Academy of Paris was directly attached to the government.

The Rector of the Academy of Paris oversees all public education. This ranges from nursery schools to universities. They also have authority over private education. The Rector implements national decisions. They consider the specific academic territory. The Chancellerie administers the joint estate of the universities. The Rector-Chancellor is responsible for the safety of the Sorbonne building.

The Inspection Académique ensures educational standards. It also supports families choosing alternative education paths. It balances national educational goals with individual needs.
