“Pereyra by my mother Inodoro by my father who was a sanitary worker” That’s how Inodoro Pereyra himself introduced himself. Right here before you stands a tribute to this iconic Argentine gaucho. Inodoro Pereyra and his inseparable canine companion Mendieta.

Inodoro Pereyra is more than just a comic strip character. He’s a cultural icon. He embodies a playful parody of the idealized gaucho. He’s a reflection of Argentine folklore and humor. He first appeared in 1972 in the Hortensia magazine. This was a period when his adventures were more action-packed.

Initially Inodoro hosted strange visitors in his pampean home. His ever-present companion Mendieta is a talking dog. Mendieta adds memorable lines like “Let’s negotiate Don Inodoro” and “What birthed him”. This witty banter became a hallmark of the strip.

The comic strip then moved to Mengano and Siete Dias magazines. Here the stories grew longer. They featured false suspense and a hero always seeking adventure. Each story spanned about ten installments. The author added humorous summaries at the start of each part. These parodied radio dramas. They also parodied popular novels and gaucho poetry.

In 1976 Inodoro along with Eulogia Tapia and Mendieta moved to the Clarin newspaper. This marked a shift. The focus moved to witty wordplay and dialogue. The art style changed too. Inodoro gained a softer look. His wife Eulogia went from a slender young woman to a somewhat clumsy matron. She gained 25kg in one panel.

Inodoro settled down. He stayed in his adobe ranch with just one tree his wife his dog and his pigsty. His adventures took a backseat. The humor shifted. It focused more on the quick succession of jokes. One per panel. Mendieta acted as the voice of reason. He countered Inodoro’s erratic and absurd humor.

Inodoro’s humor comes from wordplay and everyday situations. He is a complex character. He’s solitary yet hosts strangers. He reflects on life. He is a parody of the gaucho Martin Fierro. His stories resonate with Argentines. They reflect our culture our history and our sense of humor. This statue captures Inodoro’s spirit. It’s a reminder of a beloved character. He’s a timeless symbol of Argentine culture. He’s a symbol we can all appreciate.
