In 1894, a visionary woman named Ingrid Jespersen planted a seed of education in the heart of Østerbro. That seed blossomed into Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole. Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole stands as a testament to her dedication to empowering young women. Originally, Ingrid Jespersens Pigeskole, as it was first known, offered girls a path to higher education, a rarity in late 19th-century Copenhagen. The school started small, housed in rented rooms on what is now Nordre Frihavnsgade. But Ingrid Jespersen’s ambition matched her passion. In 1897, a beautiful National Romantic style building, designed by A. M. Andersen, rose on the same site. This new building housed the growing school. Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole quickly gained recognition for its high academic standards. In 1905, it expanded to include a gymnasium, further solidifying its commitment to academic excellence. Ingrid Jespersen was a true innovator. She introduced sloyd and established one of Denmark’s first school laboratories for physics and chemistry. These additions, quite uncommon for a girls’ school at the time, showcased her forward-thinking approach. She believed in nurturing both the minds and the hands of her students. Ingrid Jespersen led the school until 1930, shaping generations of young women. Her legacy lived on. The school continued to thrive, eventually opening its doors to male students in 1960. Today, Ingrid Jespersens Gymnasieskole remains a respected institution. It carries forward Ingrid Jespersen’s vision of fostering independent, educated individuals. The school, with its rich history and commitment to academic rigor and creativity, continues to inspire students within these very walls.
