Designed by the renowned Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony in 1929 the Incinerator was ahead of its time. It was one of thirteen incinerators built across Australia but only six remain. The Incinerator wasn’t just functional. Griffin’s design incorporated the principles of Prairie School architecture. After a period of neglect it found new life as a multi-arts facility in 2004. Renamed Incinerator Gallery in 2011 its focus shifted to establishing itself as a vibrant visual arts hub. It was even included in a list of Victoria’s best buildings by the Royal Institute of Architects. It’s listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and was once on the National Heritage Buildings Register.
Today the Incinerator Gallery houses the City of Moonee Valley Art Collection. It hosts exhibitions art courses and public programs. Free entry makes it accessible to everyone.
