“A church born from a desire to worship closer to home.” That’s essentially the origin story of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Chicago. Imagine, back in 1921, a group of Lutherans in the Shandon neighborhood found themselves traveling downtown every Sunday for services. It was quite a trek! They yearned for a church closer to their homes, a place where their community could gather and worship together. So, they took matters into their own hands and established Incarnation Lutheran Church on January 2, 1921. The church’s first home was a charming wooden structure located right here, facing Sims Street. This modest building served them well for many years. Then, in 1960, the congregation completed a brand-new sanctuary, the beautiful stone church you see before you today. Interestingly, the old wooden church continued to be used even after the new sanctuary was built. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Incarnation Lutheran Church and its commitment to serving the community.
