February 3rd, 1939. A date etched in the cultural bedrock of Mexico. Right here, at the INAH headquarters, President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río established the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. The INAH, a beacon of preservation, was born. Think of it as the guardian of Mexico’s past. From the whispers of pre-Columbian civilizations to the echoes of the Spanish colonial era, the INAH protects it all. This institution doesn’t just preserve relics. It breathes life into them. The INAH oversees a vast network. This includes over 12 museums in Mexico City alone. Plus, it manages four crucial archaeological sites within the city. Now, many visitors immediately think of the Anthropology Museum when they hear INAH. It’s understandable. The museum is the INAH’s most popular destination and a world-renowned treasure trove. But the INAH’s reach extends far beyond its museum walls. It stretches across Mexico, safeguarding over 110,000 historical monuments. These monuments date from the 16th to the 19th centuries. The INAH also protects around 29,000 of Mexico’s 200,000 pre-Columbian archaeological sites. The INAH isn’t just a caretaker. It’s a storyteller, a historian, and an educator. It unearths forgotten narratives, connecting the present to the whispers of the past. The INAH, housed in the Palace of the Marqués del Apartado, stands as a testament to Mexico’s commitment to its heritage. It reminds us that understanding where we come from is vital to shaping where we’re going.
