Sculpted in bronze, Empress Elisabeth’s statue graces Dőbrentei Square. The Imperial Statue captures her serene presence. It portrays her seated, regally dressed, yet her gaze is humble, directed downwards. The statue is more than just metal and stone. It is a testament to a complex figure loved by the Hungarian people. The inscription on the plinth reads, “Erzsebet Kiralyne,” meaning Elisabeth, Queen consort in Hungarian, and the years 1887-1898. Originally unveiled in 1932 at Eskü tér, now Március 15. tér, the Imperial Statue had a turbulent journey. During the communist era, it was removed and placed in storage, replaced by the Fisher Girl fountain. Only in 1996 did it find its current home in Dőbrentei Square. Empress Elisabeth, often called Sisi, was born in Munich in 1837. She married Emperor Franz Joseph at just 15. Sisi struggled with the rigid formality of court life, compounded by difficult relationships with her husband and mother-in-law. Tragedy struck with the loss of her daughter and later, her son’s suicide. Sisi found solace in travel. Hungary held a special place in her heart, where she was deeply admired. Her efforts in negotiating the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in 1867 further cemented her place in Hungarian history. The Hungarian people mourned her assassination in 1898. They sought to honor her memory with a statue. The creation and placement of the Imperial Statue took decades. This statue, however, is not the only tribute to Sisi in Budapest. You can find others inside St. Matthias Church, at Madách Imre tér, and in Elizabeth Park. Her name graces other landmarks like the Elisabeth Bridge and the Elizabeth Lookout Tower. The Imperial Statue offers a quiet space for reflection. It’s a reminder of Sisi’s impact on Hungary. Her life, marked by both privilege and profound sorrow, continues to resonate with visitors today.
