Nine meters tall. She dominates the harbor entrance of Konstanz. The Imperia statue. A bold, rotating figure. She holds two miniature men in her hands, as if they were mere playthings. This isn’t some ancient goddess though. The Imperia statue is a modern masterpiece, erected in 1993 by Peter Lenk. It caused quite a stir, let me tell you. She’s a powerful symbol, a commentary on the Council of Constance that took place here centuries ago.

The Imperia statue depicts a courtesan, inspired by a character from Honoré de Balzac’s satirical short story, “La Belle Impéria.” The story mocks the Catholic clergy’s morals during the Council of Constance. The men in her grasp, though resembling Pope Martin V and Emperor Sigismund, are meant to represent the folly of those seduced by power. Lenk himself stated they are not specifically the Pope and Emperor, but “fools who have acquired the insignia of secular and spiritual power.” He leaves the rest of the interpretation up to us. It’s a provocative piece. It questions the very nature of authority, both religious and political.

The Imperia statue isn’t just a static sculpture. She rotates slowly, completing a full turn every four minutes. It’s as if she’s displaying her conquests to the world, a continuous spectacle of irony. This 18-ton concrete giant stands on private property, belonging to a rail company. They had no objections to this controversial addition to the harbor. Now, she’s become a landmark. People come from all over to see her.

Interestingly, the real Imperia, the inspiration for Balzac’s story, never even visited Konstanz. She was an Italian courtesan who lived almost a century after the Council. But Lenk’s Imperia statue has become inextricably linked to the city. A constant reminder of history’s quirks, its scandals. She stands tall, a defiant symbol of satire and artistic expression. The Imperia statue is more than just a landmark. It’s a conversation starter. A challenge to conventional wisdom.
