Opened in 1842, Impasse Fleury whispers tales of a Paris long gone. This short street in the 18th arrondissement is only about thirty meters long.

Impasse Fleury begins at 74 Boulevard de la Chapelle. It ends at 13 Rue de Chartres, near Rue de la Charbonnière.

The street’s name comes from a former property owner named Fleury. Once part of the commune of La Chapelle, Impasse Fleury officially became part of Paris with a special decree.

But the Impasse Fleury you see today is very different from its past. In the 2000s the buildings here were considered unsanitary. They were demolished. Modern buildings with glass facades replaced them.

Originally, Impasse Fleury featured typical Parisian buildings. These were popular among the working class. It included hotels, even brothels. This area was known for prostitution. The Royal Hotel stood at the corner of 1 Rue Fleury and 76 Boulevard de la Chapelle. Maison Vicair was once a wine bar. Later, it became a police station in the 1970s.

Between the 1980s and 2000s, a large-scale rehabilitation project changed the Goutte d’Or district. The city of Paris initiated this controversial project in 1983. Locals strongly protested the plan. In 1984, they wrote “L’Appel des 100” to encourage building renovations instead of demolition. But the city ignored their pleas. It carried out its plans despite opposition from residents and the local council.

Now, no original buildings remain on Impasse Fleury. The Goutte d’Or library stands here. It’s a modern building known as Forum Goutte d’Or. Its design sparks much debate.

Despite its difficult past, Impasse Fleury had shaped this area. Today, a modern library stands there. It has an aesthetic that many find questionable.

The Centre Musical Fleury Goutte d’Or-Barbara is nearby.

During the German occupation, the Royal Hotel at 1 Rue Fleury served as a brothel for German soldiers.

Impasse Fleury appears in Claude Berri’s 1983 film, Tchao Pantin. The drug dealer Benssoussan lives in a run-down studio here. But none of the buildings in the film exist today.

Impasse Fleury is united with Impasse du Progrès. It now forms Rue du Groupe-Manouchian. This blending marks a new chapter for a place with many stories.

So, while little of the physical past remains at Impasse Fleury, the stories of what once was continue. They remind us that Paris is ever-changing. It is a place where the echoes of history resonate even in the most modern settings.
