“Francs-tireurs,” a name whispered in the shadows. It echoes through Impasse des Francs-Tireurs, a small alley in Marseille. The name itself evokes images of irregular soldiers, taking aim from hidden corners. But who were the francs-tireurs of this impasse? Impasse des Francs-Tireurs itself doesn’t reveal its secrets easily. Its quiet presence belies a history intertwined with a militant group known as the Francs-tireurs partisans (FTP). Active in Marseille during the 1990s, the FTP claimed responsibility for a series of attacks against the Front National (FN). Their actions, driven by antifascist ideology, were a violent response to the FN’s growing influence. One of the most notable attacks linked to Impasse des Francs-Tireurs, or rather, to the FTP, targeted the villa of Maurice Gros. Gros was the FN’s departmental secretary. The bombing took place on April 3, 1995. The attack on Gros’s villa was not an isolated incident. The FTP claimed responsibility for eleven attacks in Marseille between 1991 and 1998. Their targets included FN headquarters, a restaurant scheduled to host an FN youth meeting, and even the Italian consulate during Silvio Berlusconi’s visit. The two key figures behind the FTP, Yves Peirat and William Ferrari, were eventually arrested in 1999. Peirat received a five-year prison sentence, while Ferrari served a shorter term. Their trial drew attention and garnered support from various left-wing groups, including unions and political parties. The FTP’s actions, though violent, were viewed by some as a form of resistance against the far-right. Impasse des Francs-Tireurs stands as a silent reminder of this turbulent period. It’s a place where the echoes of clandestine activities and ideological clashes still linger. The name, etched into the street sign, serves as a tangible link to the FTP and their fight against the FN. While the alley itself may appear unremarkable, its name carries the weight of a complex and often violent history. A history that continues to shape Marseille’s political and social landscape.
