Did you know Immanuelskirken’s story begins with a dispute? A disagreement in 1889 about appointing a priest at Vartov church led to the creation of Copenhagen’s Valgmenighed congregation. This new group needed a space to worship. Thus Immanuelskirken was born. Standing proudly on Forhøjningsholms Allé in Frederiksberg it’s more than just a church. It’s a testament to a community’s unwavering faith.

Immanuelskirken is a beautiful example of Danish Gesamtkunstwerk in skønvirke style. Architect Andreas Clemmensen designed the building completed in 1893. The tower a later addition by R V Rue followed in 1905. The design is Romanesque Revival inspired by Italian churches. Think Ravenna and Siena. Notice the large red brick the Munkesten so typical of Denmark. The round-arched entrance dominates the west gable. Above it a stunning glass mosaic welcomes you. More mosaics adorn the four additional entrances. Niels Skovgaard designed one of these. His brother Joakim Skovgaard designed the others.

Inside Immanuelskirken is truly a feast for the eyes. The altar piece a masterpiece by Niels Skovgaard is framed by intricately carved wood. Poul S Christiansen Johannes Kragh and Niels Larsen Stevns collaborated on this exquisite frame. The altar carpet a creation of Joakim Skovgaard features lilies and crocuses. These aren’t just pretty flowers. They’re symbols of resurrection and Christ. The organ a product of A H Buch’s workshop dates back to 1896. It has witnessed countless hymns and prayers over the years.

The church’s interior features several reliefs depicting religious scenes. Joakim Skovgaard Niels Skovgaard and Christian C Peters contributed to this impressive collection. Many of these religious scenes are beautifully integrated into the overall design. The overall effect is one of harmony and spiritual unity. It’s a space that’s both visually stunning and deeply moving.

Interestingly Immanuelskirken wasn’t just a setting for worship. A scene from the 2000 Morten Korch film Fruen på Hamre a wedding was even filmed here. The church played a significant role in the film. This fact showcases the enduring appeal of Immanuelskirken. It’s a place where history faith and even cinema intersect. As you stand before Immanuelskirken remember its unique history. Remember the disputes the dedication and the artistic collaborations that brought this remarkable church to life. It’s a place of worship and a piece of art a testament to faith and community in Copenhagen.
