Immanuel Baptist Church

You might be surprised to learn that this seemingly unassuming church was built on top of a previous congregation’s story. Welcome to Immanuel Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota! The story of Immanuel Baptist Church might not sound like a blockbuster movie, but it’s a tale of resilience and the power of community. This church was founded on June 28, 1886, by just ten people. The founders were driven by their faith and a desire to build a strong community. Immanuel Baptist Church was first called the Fort Street Baptist Mission, under the direction of the First Baptist Church of Saint Paul. They held services in various places before the church was officially organized. In 1913, the church was sold, and a new location was purchased on the corner of Lee and West 7th Street for a grand sum of $1,000.00! The church was constructed for $11,000, and this is where it stands today. The road, Lee, is now known as Watson Avenue. Despite many challenges over the years, the members of Immanuel Baptist Church have remained steadfast in their faith and have always been a welcoming presence in their community. The church decided in 1998 to become an “independent” organization, trusting in God’s direction to keep Immanuel Baptist Church a “lighthouse on the corner.” So, now you know the story of this church, but maybe not what it means to be a part of this vibrant community, a place where people come together to support each other and to share their faith.
