In 1904, the Immaculate Conception Parish in Ellerslie first opened its doors. It wasn’t always known by this formal name though. Locals affectionately referred to it as the Father Walter McDonald Memorial Church. This remarkable priest was the driving force behind its construction. The church stands as a testament to his dedication. Immaculate Conception Parish has witnessed countless services, weddings, and community gatherings over the years. The original foundation stone laid in 1904 marked not only the beginning of a church but also the solidification of a Catholic presence in Ellerslie that had existed since the 1880s. Imagine the echoes of those early parishioners within these walls. Immaculate Conception Parish also boasts a hall. This hall became a social hub in the 1940s and 50s, hosting popular dances that sparked many a romance and subsequent marriage. Some descendants of those early families still worship at Immaculate Conception Parish, creating a living link to its rich past. The parish also has a unique Christmas crib with a fascinating story of its own. The changes in the church’s interior reflect the evolution of Catholic practices over time. For those interested in delving deeper, the book “A Good Man’s Legacy,” published during the centenary celebrations in 2004, chronicles the history of Immaculate Conception Parish. It tells not only of the church’s journey but also of the surrounding district. More recently, in 2013, the church welcomed the Syro-Malabar community. Bishop Patrick Dunn granted them permission to hold their liturgical celebrations at Immaculate Conception Parish. Father Joy Thottamkara, a Redemptorist priest, was appointed as parish priest. Redemptorists from the Liguori province in India have served the parish ever since, adding another layer to the vibrant tapestry of Immaculate Conception Parish. As you stand here, before Immaculate Conception Parish, consider the generations who have passed through these doors. Their stories, their faith, and their contributions have shaped this place into the beloved community landmark it is today.
