“A thousand people couldn’t fit in the Immaculate Conception Church” whispered the tour guide. That was the headline in the South Bourke Standard newspaper on October 10th, 1869. It was the day the Immaculate Conception Church first opened its doors. The church was a welcome addition to Hawthorn. The local Catholic community had grown so much that other churches were overflowing. The church was built on land donated by Michael Lynch. This location was perfect. It was near the former Hawthorn Town Hall, the center of the community. Jesuit Father Edward Nolan enthusiastically rallied support to raise funds for the building. The church’s design, a beautiful example of French flamboyant Gothic architecture, was chosen from fourteen entries. Imagine the excitement as architects Reed, Smart & Tappin saw their vision come to life. The church was initially built with a nave. Later, the chancel, choir, and tower were added in 1891. Further additions were made in 1913, 1921, and 1961. The intricate interior boasts three eastern apses of equal height. It features stunning stained glass by renowned artists like Ferguson, Urie & Lyon and Mayer, Montgomery, and Brooks Robinson. Today, the Immaculate Conception Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It’s a beacon of beauty and history in the heart of Hawthorn.
