He saw the need for a place of worship and felt the need to create a space for the ever-growing Catholic community. Crouch and Wilson, two talented Melbourne architects, won a design competition to build the church. Their Gothic style with its iconic spire, stained-glass windows, and wrought iron gates, still inspire awe today. The Immaculate Conception, while seemingly standing still in its beauty, has evolved since its construction in 1869. Its spire, added in 1921, reaching for the heavens, became a landmark for the neighborhood. The church’s stained-glass windows, created by Ferguson & Urie, are a beautiful feast for the eyes. They tell stories of saints and biblical events, bathing the church in colorful light. Inside, you’ll find the ornate carved altar, shipped from Belgium and a reminder of the dedication of the early parishioners who helped finance its construction.
