“Gazetecilik Enstitüsü”. That was the original name of what we now know as the İletişim Fakültesi. Today we will explore this faculty. It stands as Turkey’s first communication faculty. The İletişim Fakültesi has a rich history. Its story began in 1950 within İstanbul University.

In 1947 the İstanbul Journalists Association sought to establish a school for journalism. They petitioned İstanbul University’s Senate. The goal was clear. They wanted to cultivate journalists. These journalists would be equipped with a modern education. This education would be rooted in academic principles. Sedat Simavi spearheaded this effort. He was the Founding President of the Journalists Association. Simavi penned a letter. He presented it to Ord. Prof. Dr. Sıddık Sami Onar. Onar was the Rector of İstanbul University at the time.

Between 1975 and 1980, it operated under the Faculty of Economics. During this time it was known as the Institute of Journalism and Public Relations. In 1980, it gained higher education status. It was renamed the School of Journalism and Public Relations still under the Faculty of Economics.

A further transformation occurred in 1982. It was renamed the Press and Publication School. This time it reported directly to the Rectorate of İstanbul University. Finally in 1992, it achieved its current status. It became the İstanbul University İletişim Fakültesi.

The first dean of the Faculty was Prof. Dr. Tayfun Akgüner. He had previously served as the Director of the High School. Today the İletişim Fakültesi continues to offer education. It has programs in journalism, public relations and advertising. Also it provides courses in radio, television and cinema. Students can pursue bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.

The İletişim Fakültesi has adapted through the years. It has changed names and affiliations. Yet its core mission remains steadfast. The mission is to educate and train professionals. These professionals will shape the future of communication.

Imagine the discussions that have taken place within these walls. Think of the debates on freedom of the press. Picture the brainstorming sessions on effective communication strategies. The İletişim Fakültesi has been a hub of intellectual activity. It has been a place where ideas are born and challenged.

As you stand before the İletişim Fakültesi consider its impact. It has shaped the media landscape in Turkey. It has produced generations of journalists, broadcasters and communication experts. The faculty’s graduates have gone on to influence public opinion. They have shaped political discourse. They have contributed to the cultural fabric of the nation.

The İletişim Fakültesi is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Turkey’s commitment to communication. It is a testament to the power of information and the importance of media literacy. As we conclude our visit, remember the legacy of this institution.
