Tucked away on the Marne River, Île Fanac is a hidden gem. It’s a world apart from the bustling city of Paris. Île Fanac feels almost untouched since the 19th century. About forty houses nestle there, hidden from view beneath the Joinville Bridge. Île Fanac is more than just a picturesque island. It’s a coveted treasure. Residents speak of their love for this unique place. One resident, Laurent Caire, lives on Île Fanac. He wouldn’t trade his home for anything, not even a place in the chic 4th arrondissement. He enjoys the practicality of his location for rowing. Île Fanac has seen a transformation over the years. It evolved from agricultural land to a charming residential area starting in the late 19th century. Small pavilions with gardens began to dot the landscape. While some have disappeared, especially in the southern part during the 1970s, many remain. These charming buildings represent a typical architectural style of the island. One of these pavilions now houses the Joinville Eau Vive Canoe-Kayak Club, founded in 1970. Next door is the former garage of Pelissier, a renowned boat builder from the early 20th century. Originally, it was near the restaurant “Chez Jullien”. A monumental villa stands nearby. Its distinctive triple neo-medieval turret is hard to miss. It now houses the Joinville-le-Pont Municipal School of Arts. This structure reflects the late 19th-century fascination with neo-Gothic architecture. Île Fanac holds a special place in the community. It’s the smallest district in Joinville-le-Pont. In 1999, its population was 98, living on 3.9 hectares. This was down from 119 residents in 1990. No cars are allowed on the island. Residents park on the other side of the riverbank. Around forty buildings grace the island. Construction here is closely monitored by the Architects of French Buildings and the Water Agency. A significant 85% of Île Fanac is classified and protected. While the Joinville Bridge crosses the island, it only connects via a pedestrian staircase and an elevator installed in 2010. Situated in a flood zone, Île Fanac is vulnerable during high waters. The tip of the island, accessible from the bridge, is a delightful garden. It features cherry trees, chestnut trees, and charming hornbeams. Île Fanac isn’t just a residential area. It’s a hub for cultural and sporting activities. The Municipal School of Arts is housed in a building from 1860. The Joinville Eau Vive canoe-kayak club and the Aviron Marne et Joinville rowing club also call the island home. The Aviron Marne et Joinville building, built in 1883, suffered a fire in 2005. Thankfully, it was faithfully reconstructed in 2007. The music school sits beside the site of the former “Chez Jullien” restaurant. This spot was even mentioned in the writings of Émile Zola. Île Fanac is a place of tranquility and beauty. It’s a beloved escape for residents and visitors alike.
