High above the lake, imagine a temple beckoning. That’s the Temple de la Sibylle on Île du Belvédère. This island paradise sits within the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in Paris. Île du Belvédère covers about 6700 square meters. It offers a unique escape right in the city.

The Temple de la Sibylle is often confused with the Temple of Vesta. This confusion stems from the two temples standing side-by-side in Tivoli. But here on Île du Belvédère, it offers amazing views. To reach the top of Île du Belvédère, a grand staircase was built. It had 173 steps. Sadly, the staircase is now closed to the public for safety. But the bridges still offer easy access.
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont was created to give the working class access to green space. Napoleon III and Haussmann wanted to purify the air in this northern district. The park features a large cascade and Île du Belvédère. The cascade drops 32 meters into a grotto.
The park was inaugurated during the 1867 Exposition Universelle. Today, it welcomes six million visitors each year. People come to picnic and enjoy the outdoors.
Sadly, Île du Belvédère faced challenges. In 2021, access was restricted due to collapse risks. The park is a listed historical monument. Renovations are planned but could take 10 to 20 years.
