Did Île d’Amour always hold such a romantic name? Île d’Amour, the “Island of Love,” sits serenely in the Marne River. It’s a small islet, just a short distance downstream from the Bry bridge. North of Île d’Amour, you’ll find the larger Île du Moulin, and to the south, the slopes of Bry-sur-Marne rise gently. The narrow channel separating it from Île du Moulin is barely a few meters wide. Île d’Amour itself stretches about 140 meters long and averages about 16 meters in width. Reaching this secluded spot requires a boat, adding to its mystique. Back in medieval times, Île d’Amour and Île du Moulin played a crucial role for the lords of Bry-sur-Marne. These islands, then known as the Îles Saint-Antoine or sometimes the Îles de Bry, gave them control over the Marne River traffic. Willows thrived here, their branches harvested for osier. Starting in 1859, the islands transformed into a popular getaway for city dwellers. Romantic boat trips up the Marne to the islands became fashionable. This newfound popularity might be the very reason why the name “Île d’Amour” emerged, replacing the older names. A darker moment touched Île d’Amour in July 2018, when a fifteen-year-old tragically drowned trying to swim across the Marne to reach the island. Today, Île d’Amour remains a part of Bry-sur-Marne, its small size belying its long and layered history. It’s a place where the echoes of medieval willows mingle with the whispers of 19th-century lovers. Île d’Amour.
