Gazing at Belle Île, ever wonder how many tears it took to create this stunning island? Legend claims fairies, banished from Brocéliande Forest, wept an ocean of sorrow, forming the Gulf of Morbihan. Their floral crowns became the gulf’s 365 islands. Three crowns drifted away, becoming Houat, Hoedic, and the fairest of them all, Belle Île, the queen’s own. Belle Île’s strategic location, with its precious fresh water, made it a vital stop between the British Isles and the Iberian Peninsula. Monks from Redon Abbey built a monastery overlooking Le Palais in the 11th century. This tranquil setting was shattered in 1572 when Charles IX gifted Belle Île to Albert de Gondi, Catherine de Medici’s favorite. The monastery was demolished to fortify the island. Belle Île changed hands again in 1658, becoming the property of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s finance minister, who ironically never visited. In 1761, after a month-long siege, Belle Île fell to the English. It was returned to France in 1763 in exchange for Minorca, a testament to its strategic value. The island offered a new beginning to 78 exiled Canadian families in 1765, though only twenty ultimately remained. Belle Île continued to attract artists. Monet immortalized its beauty, capturing the iconic needles of Port Coton. Today, the Citadel at Le Palais stands open, inviting visitors to explore Belle Île’s rich history. From sandy beaches and hidden coves to wooded valleys and charming villages, Belle Île offers a diverse landscape. Since 1998, the island has hosted “Lyrique en mer,” a theatrical festival adding another layer to its vibrant cultural tapestry.
