The original Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau e São Julião, built in 1280, met a tragic end during the devastating earthquake of 1755. Dozens perished within its walls during All Saints’ Day Mass. What you see today is a neoclassical reconstruction. The rebuilding took place between 1776 and 1850, breathing new life into the heart of Lisbon. Step inside the Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau e São Julião, and you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking sight. The ceiling, beautifully restored in 2010, depicts scenes from the life of St. Nicholas and the three theological virtues: Faith, Hope, and Charity. These paintings, vibrant and full of life, tell stories of devotion and miracles. The 18th-century organ, also restored in 2010, fills the church with its majestic sound, adding another layer to the rich atmosphere. The chancel houses a magnificent gilded Blessed Sacrament throne, a testament to the church’s grandeur and devotion. The Igreja Paroquial de São Nicolau e São Julião became a repository for art from other churches destroyed in the earthquake. It even housed a museum until the 1960s. Though the museum is gone, the church retains its unique historical and artistic significance. It is the only church in Lisbon open late, offering a sanctuary of peace and beauty amidst the bustling city.
