“Have you ever heard about the ‘Carlitos da Travessa’?” an elderly woman asked, her weathered hand gesturing towards the Igreja Paroquial de São Domingos de Benfica. “He was just a boy when he started organizing youth groups, full of energy and faith.” We stand before the modern Igreja Paroquial de São Domingos de Benfica. It’s hard to imagine it buzzing with the youthful spirit of a priest named Carlos dos Santos. But this understated church holds the legacy of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community. Appointed Parish Priest in 1962, Padre Carlos found the old Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário inadequate for the growing parish.
He dreamt of a space that could accommodate not just worship, but the many social and charitable activities he envisioned. His vision materialized in 1973 with the inauguration of the new church and community center. This Igreja Paroquial de São Domingos de Benfica became the heart of a thriving community. Padre Carlos’ work extended beyond the church walls. He revitalized sectors of liturgy, evangelization, and social work. He spearheaded the creation of two more parishes, Sagrada Família do Calhariz de Benfica and São Tomás de Aquino da Estrada da Luz. These were carved from the original parish. Padre Carlos’ compassionate spirit led him to prioritize the needs of the elderly and underprivileged.
He established a Day Center, Casa Nossa Senhora do Rosário. He even initiated plans for a retirement home, a project that saw completion in 2010, years after his passing in 1997. The Igreja Paroquial de São Domingos de Benfica stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. It’s a place where faith and community intertwine. His legacy is a beacon of hope and a reminder that a single person’s dedication can create a lasting impact.
