In 1993, a seed of faith was planted in Lisbon’s Alto do Lumiar. This seed blossomed into the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Alto do Lumiar. The church’s story began with a small group of families. They gathered for Sunday Mass at the Lar dos Deficientes das Forças Armadas on Avenida Rainha D. Amélia. As the community grew, the space became too small. Recognizing the need, Cardinal António Ribeiro, the Patriarch of Lisbon, established the parish. The date was July 16, 1993, the feast day of Our Lady of Carmel. The Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Alto do Lumiar stands as a testament to this burgeoning community. Its boundaries encompass the area south of the Campo Grande Viaduct and Second Circular. To the west, it borders Avenida Padre Cruz. The eastern border is marked by Lisbon Airport’s perimeter fence. Finally, its northern limit stretches from Avenida Padre Cruz along Rua Mário Sampaio Ribeiro and Rua Luís de Freitas Branco, eventually reaching Avenida Álvaro Cunhal. The church wasn’t always the impressive structure you see today. It took years of growth and dedication. On September 26, 1999, the church was officially consecrated. Patriarch José da Cruz Policarpo led the solemn dedication. This marked a significant milestone. The Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora do Carmo do Alto do Lumiar, the funeral chapels, the parish hall, its adjacent rooms, and the social center complex became fully operational. Today, the church offers a beautiful view of the city, easily accessible by car and public transport. It’s a place of worship, community, and breathtaking panoramas.
