Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro

Stepping back in time, imagine Rio de Janeiro in the 17th century. A devout couple, Jerônimo Vellozo Cubas and his wife Beatriz Álvaro Gago, made a generous donation. Their gift of land and a small chapel, dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Desterro, laid the foundation for what would become a beloved landmark: Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. The Carmelite priests, recipients of this generous offering, established a monastery on the land. They saw the potential of the small chapel. The Carmelites expanded and transformed it into the church we see today, the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. In 1750, Frei Francisco Quintanilha spearheaded renovations, breathing new life into the growing Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. The 19th century brought further transformation to Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. A grand wedding, the marriage of the fazendeiro Vicente Alvares Ribeiro’s daughter, prompted another round of renovations. During this period, beautiful azulejos, reminiscent of those adorning Lapa do Desterro, were added to the facade. These colorful tiles brought a distinct Rio flair to the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro’s charm lies in its intimate scale. It features a single altar, a choir loft, and a sacristy nestled beside the Epistle side. The main altar’s retable, crafted from masonry, houses captivating images. These depict Bom Jesus da Cana Verde, the Sagrada Família (Holy Family), and Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Mount Carmel). These sacred figures are believed to have originated from the Fazenda dos Padres Carmelitas, adding another layer of history to the Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro. While the altar and choir’s intricate carvings were recreated in the 19th century, they retain their historical significance. The church boasts rare and valuable images and pews, some unique for their woven straw seats. Look up and admire the naive paintings that adorn the ceiling of the nave and chancel. These charming artworks offer a glimpse into the artistic traditions of the time. Igreja Nossa Senhora do Desterro continues to stand as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the rich history of Rio de Janeiro.
