They had initially worked at the Instituto de Preservaçao do Rio an orphanage. However Father Angelo de Paoli sought more freedom to educate the boys. He found this house in Gávea now the Jardim Botânico neighborhood.
Construction of a chapel started soon after the purchase. On a significant day June 7 1925 the then Archbishop Dom Sebastião Leme blessed this new chapel. The chapel held first communions and catechism classes for 200 children in just one year.

The chapel’s work in the community prompted the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro to establish a parish. On January 1 1970 the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Divina Providencia officially became a parish. It grew from a small house to a thriving parish serving a community of about 1500 people.
