“Since 1931 we have been spreading the gospel of Christ with quality.” Those words resonate as we stand before Igreja Evangelica Congregacional de Ramos. This church has been a beacon of faith in Rio de Janeiro for nearly a century. It offers carinho and atenção or care and attention to all who seek solace within its walls.
The Igreja Evangelica Congregacional is more than just a building. It’s a community. A place where people come together to share their joys and sorrows. They support each other through life’s challenges. Founded on Christian principles, the church provides a spiritual home.
But what exactly does “Congregacional” mean? It’s a denomination with roots stretching back to the 19th century. In 1858 Robert Reid Kalley founded the first Brazilian Protestant congregation to worship in Portuguese. Kalley was a Scottish doctor and missionary. His work laid the groundwork for future Congregational churches throughout Brazil.
Kalley’s Igreja Evangélica Fluminense was founded with just 14 members. From that small group, many missionaries spread out across Brazil. They planted new churches and shared their faith. Kalley created a set of doctrines called Breve Exposição das Doutrinas Fundamentais do Cristianismo.
Over the years, the Congregational movement in Brazil has experienced some divisions. In 1942, the União das Igrejas Congregacionais e Cristãs do Brasil was formed. It lasted until 1968. Then in 1969, it became the União das Igrejas Evangélicas Congregacionais do Brasil or UIECB. The UIECB headquarters is in Rio de Janeiro.
Another group is the Aliança das Igrejas Evangélicas Congregacionais do Brasil or AIECB. They split from the UIECB in the 1960s. The AIECB embraces Pentecostal doctrines and the Holy Spirit’s action. Their headquarters are in João Pessoa.
