The Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento stands proudly in the heart of Lisbon’s Chiado district. Its history stretches back to 1147 a time shortly after Afonso Henriques the first King of Portugal liberated Lisbon from Moorish rule.

Initially a modest chapel the Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento blossomed into a grand Baroque church by 1750. The 1755 earthquake however tragically reduced it to rubble. Imagine the devastation the city faced that day. The church was lost among the crumbling buildings of Lisbon.

Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos masterfully designed the church we see today. It reopened in 1784 a testament to the Marquis of Pombal’s ambitious reconstruction plan for Lisbon. A fascinating detail sets this church apart. Pombal envisioned all new buildings facing south a grand design for the city. The Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento however faced east a unique choice among Lisbon’s churches.

More than 20 years of meticulous restoration work followed. Finally in 2009 the Igreja do Santíssimo Sacramento welcomed worshippers once again. The restored church now houses a fascinating crypt containing mummified remains. Its ornate ceiling paintings are truly awe-inspiring.
