What if I told you a grand church once graced this very spot? A church so unique, it defied Brazilian architectural norms. This is the story of the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos, a lost treasure of Rio de Janeiro. The Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos, built in 1733, stood as a testament to innovative design. Unlike many churches influenced by Portuguese styles, this church embraced Italian traditions. Its circular layout and intricate chapel were architectural marvels, rarely seen in Brazil. The church’s design is shrouded in mystery, possibly attributed to either Lieutenant Colonel José Cardoso Ramalho or Dr. Antônio Pereira de Sousa Calheiros. It rose quickly, completed in just five years. Its Baroque and Rococo influences blended seamlessly with the Italianate style. John Bury, an architectural historian, considered it an isolated episode in Brazilian architecture. He compared it to the Nossa Senhora do Rosário in Ouro Preto. The Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos underwent various renovations throughout the years. These occurred in 1794-5, 1801-2, 1853, and 1856-9. When the IPHAN, Brazil’s historical preservation institute, was established in 1937, the church was among the first to receive individual landmark status. However, progress often comes at a price. During the Vargas Era, modernization swept through Brazil. The creation of Avenida Presidente Vargas meant demolishing numerous colonial structures. The Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos was one of them. There was even a plan to move the church. They wanted to replace the lower walls with concrete and use rollers to relocate it. This method was used in Europe with steel rollers. However, steel was scarce due to the war, prompting the suggestion of concrete. This plan failed when the concrete rollers cracked under pressure, risking the church’s collapse. Sadly, in 1944, the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos was demolished. But its chapel survived. Pieces of the church found new life in other Rio de Janeiro churches and entered the art market. Parts of the dome, including angel heads, were displayed at the 1998 exhibition “O Universo Mágico do Barroco.” Cherubs from the church became part of the Museu de Arte Sacra de São Paulo’s collection. The main altarpiece’s image and the chapel’s main doorway were moved to the new Igreja de São Pedro in Rio Comprido. Imagine the original church: a curved design, an oval nave, oval side chapels, a narthex, a choir, and a centrally located main altar. Two ambiguous bell towers framed an arched facade. The carved wooden pivoting door was salvaged and installed in the new Rio Comprido church. The gilded rococo woodwork inside may have been the work of Mestre Valentim. A dome adorned with angels and decorations dedicated to St. Peter graced the nave. A lantern on top of the dome provided natural light. The main altar housed a Portuguese statue of St. Peter. Side altars were dedicated to São Gonçalo and Nossa Senhora da Boa Hora. Though the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos is gone, its story remains. It’s a story of architectural innovation, a testament to Italian influence, and a reminder of the sacrifices made in the name of progress.
