Stands a church. The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros. It whispers tales of carpenters and resilience. This church is more than just a building. It is a symbol of faith and craftsmanship.

The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros began as a small chapel in 1545. It was founded by the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph of the Carpenters. By 1567, it became a parish church. The church expanded in the 17th century. An inscription in the nave tells the story.

Then disaster struck. The earthquake of 1755 devastated Lisbon. The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros was badly damaged. Reconstruction became essential. Master mason Caetano Tomás oversaw the work. The rebuilt church reflects Baroque and Pombaline architectural styles.

For over three decades, the Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros remained closed. The building had fallen into disrepair. But in recent years, it reopened. It welcomes the community again.

Padre José Freire played a key role in the revival. He saw the value of this historic temple. Its reopening has special meaning for many. Some locals remember receiving sacraments here long ago. Returning to the Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros is a revival of the past.

Extensive restoration work was necessary. The roof was replaced to stop leaks. The wooden floor was renewed. A space was left beneath the wood to protect it. Currently, technicians are restoring the azulejo tiles. These tiles depict scenes from the life of Saint Joseph.

The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros also has a connection to the Casa dos Vinte e Quatro. This building is next to the church. Representatives of the city’s guilds met here. They had an important role in the acclamation of D. João I. Legend says that after the 1755 earthquake, Christmas Mass was celebrated here.

Inside the Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros, you can admire the Baroque interior. Look for the 18th-century azulejo panels. The 19th-century ceiling painting shows Saint Joseph and the Angel. The main chapel features a marble altarpiece.

The Irmandade de Ofícios da Antiga Casa dos Vinte e Quatro is the client of the Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros. Between 2016 and 2020, the building was renovated and rehabilitated. The original volume of the Casa dos 24 was restored. The added floor was demolished. A new metal roof structure was installed. The building’s structural integrity was reinforced.

Note the rare heraldic representation. It shows the Brotherhood and its trades on the entrance portico. The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros and Casa dos 24 symbolize Lisbon’s rich heritage. They possess artistic and historical value.

The Igreja de São José dos Carpinteiros stands as a testament. It shows the enduring spirit of Lisbon. Its story is etched in its walls. It is visible in its art. It echoes in the prayers of its community. Take a moment to appreciate this treasure.
