“Did they really execute people right here in front of the church?” Before you even finish the question, you feel a shiver run down your spine as you stand before the Igreja de São João da Praça. This unassuming church, nestled on a quiet street in Lisbon, holds within its walls echoes of a tumultuous past. The Igreja de São João da Praça has borne witness to centuries of Lisbon’s history. Its origins date back to the 13th or 14th century, its name, meaning “Church of Saint John of the Square”, hinting at its early significance. It is believed that the square upon which it stands was once a place where sentences, including executions, were carried out. Over the years, the Igreja de São João da Praça faced trials. It was damaged in the devastating earthquake of 1755. It was rebuilt only to suffer a fire in 1896, which ravaged the chapel and roof. Through it all, the church was restored and rebuilt, a testament to its importance to the community. Inside the Igreja de São João da Praça, art and history entwine. The interior, with its octagonal nave and high altars, houses beautiful Baroque imagery and captivating Rococo elements. Look closely at the altars in the transept – you’ll find the masterful work of Machado de Castro, one of Portugal’s most celebrated sculptors. As you stand in the hushed reverence of the Igreja de São João da Praça, let the echoes of its past wash over you. The whispers of history mingle with the faint scent of incense, painting a vivid tapestry of life, death, and faith. This is more than just a church. It’s a living chronicle of Lisbon’s soul.
