Whispers of the past echo around the Igreja de São Bartolomeu da Charneca. This 17th-century church, also known as Igreja Paroquial da Charneca, stands as a testament to time. It replaced an older chapel, possibly dedicated to the Holy Spirit. The church’s simple, whitewashed exterior, accented with gray socles, might deceive you. Inside, a vibrant world of art and history unfolds. The rectangular layout encompasses a nave, chancel, and a bell tower. The tower, with its domed roof and arched windows, stands proudly to the right of the main structure. Adjoining the sides, you’ll find attached bodies of varying volumes and heights, their roofs a mix of single and double slopes. Step inside Igreja de São Bartolomeu da Charneca, and you’ll be greeted by a richly decorated interior. Bento Coelho da Silveira, a prominent 17th-century painter, adorned the church with his stunning artwork, including panels depicting scenes from the life of St. Bartholomew. Later, in the 18th century, António de Oliveira Bernardes added his touch with beautiful azulejo tile panels. The main altarpiece, a masterpiece of gilded woodwork, showcases images of St. Bartholomew, Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Peter, and Our Lady of Conception. Other altars within the church are dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Purification. A chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Piety houses the tomb of its founder, António Luís de Mesquita, and his descendants. Igreja de São Bartolomeu da Charneca has witnessed history unfold. It withstood the devastating earthquake of 1755, suffering damage but enduring. Its adjoining cemetery, accessible through a gate on the right side, served the community until 1959. In 2007, the remains were transferred to Lumiar Cemetery, making way for two mortuary chapels. The church’s significance was recognized in 2012 when it was classified as a Public Interest Monument. The adjacent parochial cross, with its intricate base and Latin cross, adds to the historical richness of the site. Igreja de São Bartolomeu da Charneca continues to serve its community. It remains a place of worship, a cultural hub, and a living link to Lisbon’s past. The church stands as a silent storyteller, its walls echoing with centuries of faith, art, and resilience.
