Ever wondered how a princess and an infanta shaped a convent? Here at the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus, their stories echo through the centuries. This convent, officially named the Santa Teresa de Jesus de Carnide Convent, holds a captivating past.

Founded in 1642, the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus owes its existence to Micaela Margarida de Sant’Ana. She was the daughter of Emperor Matthias of the Holy Roman Empire and niece to John IV. António Gomes da Mata, the kingdom’s High-Courier, donated the land.

In 1650, D. Maria, the Infanta, arrived at the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus. She was John IV’s daughter and received her education here. Upon her father’s death in 1656, she donned the Carmelites’ habit. D. Maria played a vital role. She spurred the completion of the church and conventual sections. Her patronage led to the ornamentation with paintings, goldwork, and utensils.

The Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus sheltered noble ladies and widows. However, with the ban on religious orders in 1834, it transitioned. It served as a religious retreat. This continued until the death of the last nun in 1881.

The convent’s architecture reveals more about its history. João Nunes Tinoco designed the irregular layout. It is structured around a quadrangular cloister north of the church. This deviates from typical arrangements. Yet the design adheres to the Benedictine convent model. The Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus faces inward, a characteristic of Discalced Carmelites convents.

Look at the main facade. It features two stories with diverse openings. The original convent entrance stands out. Above it, a stone niche holds a sculpture of Saint Joseph with the Child Jesus.

Notice the church’s main facade at the south end. Pillars and quoins frame it. A triangular pediment crowns the portal. Here, you will spot Infanta D. Maria’s coat of arms. Above, a glazed niche displays an image of Santa Teresa.

Inside the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus, a Latin cross plan unfolds. The nave has a barrel vault ceiling. The crossing features a groin vault. Ornamental grotesque paintings adorn the ceilings attributed to Inácio de Oliveira Bernardes and José da Costa Carneiro. Blue and white tile panels line the walls. These depict scenes from the 17th and 18th centuries. Above them, large canvases by Bento Coelho da Silveira, Inácio de Oliveira Bernardes, and José da Costa Negreiros capture your gaze.

In the transept, two altars showcase 17th-century polychrome tile frontals. The chancel remains undecorated. Marble covers the back wall.

To the altar’s right, a grated iron window with wooden shutters allowed the nuns to attend mass. A small gilded door provided communion.

A tomb marks the founder’s resting place. It features an epigraphic record. This lies within an iron-divided space on the Epistle side. Adjacent to the chancel, a compartment presents scenes from Saint Teresa’s life. Tile panels cover the walls. An archway holds Infanta D. Maria’s funerary monument in an “embrechados” composition.

In the convent area, the cloister centers around the “Fountain of Health.” Four wings compose the cloister. The south wing connects directly to the church’s transept. Altars with polychrome tile frontals stand at the corners. These display the Carmelites’ coat of arms. Blue and white tile panels with vase decorations line the wings.

Following the Law for the Extinction of Religious Orders, the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus closed in 1891. This happened after the death of the last nun. The state took possession. Since then, various owners and uses have shaped the building. It housed the Congregation of the Sisters of São José de Cluny from 1892 to 1910. Then, the Asilo das Velhinhas de Palhavã, later Carnide, occupied it from 1929 to 1949. Currently, the Confraria de São Vicente de Paulo uses the Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus.

Originally from the Igreja de Santa Teresa, a monumental nativity scene by sculptor António Ferreira found its way to the National Museum of Ancient Art in 1916. It depicts the Nativity, the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the Adoration of the Magi, and the Flight into Egypt. These are interspersed with popular scenes, musical angels, and a glory of angels.

The Igreja de Santa Teresa do Menino Jesus stands as a testament to faith, art, and history. Its walls hold stories of princesses, infantes, and the nuns who once called it home.
