Before you stands the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos. It’s a beautiful church in Lisbon. It wasn’t always here though. The original church stood on this very spot. It was a much smaller chapel. Cardinal Henry of Portugal established the parish of Anjos. He carved it from the vast Santa Justa parish. This small chapel expanded in the 17th century under King Philip III.
For years it served as a collegiate church. Eleven chaplains maintained daily services. This continued until the 1820s. A lack of funds unfortunately ended the tradition.
Then came the decision to build Avenida D Amelia. The original Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos had to go. It was demolished in 1908. The avenue was later renamed Avenida Almirante Reis after the 1910 revolution. The current building stands on the western side. Architect Jose Luis Monteiro created the new Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos. He kept the original proportions. He updated the facade giving it a striking Neoclassical look.
The real treasure? The Baroque interior. It was carefully moved brick by painstaking brick. The 17th and 18th-century details survived. The gilded altars remain stunning. So do the painted ceilings. They depict scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life. Biblical allegories add to the splendor. Look closely. You’ll find sculptures too. The image of Our Lady of Conception is a highlight. It dates back to the late 16th century. Some paintings are even older. A panel by Mannerist painter Diogo Teixeira shows Saint Irene. She’s healing the wounds of Saint Sebastian. A rare painting of Saint Anthony of Lisbon rests in the sacristy. It’s a 16th-century masterpiece. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos is truly a place where history and beauty intertwine.
