At the heart of Copacabana, a beacon of faith stands tall. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. This church isn’t just a place of worship. It is a testament to a fascinating journey of faith, art, and community. The story of Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Copacabana begins not here, but in Bolivia, with an indigenous sculptor named Francisco Tito Yupanqui. Yupanqui, a descendant of Inca royalty, felt a deep love for the Virgin Mary. He dreamt of creating a statue of her for the humble chapel in his hometown of Copacabana, Bolivia. His first attempt, a clay figure, was deemed too crude by the local priest. Undeterred, Yupanqui journeyed to Potosí, a city known for its skilled sculptors. There, he honed his craft, praying and fasting for guidance. Finally, he carved a beautiful wooden image of the Virgin of Candelaria. The statue’s arrival in Copacabana, Bolivia was met with joyous processions. It was placed in the chapel’s main altar, becoming a source of miracles and taking on the name Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. The devotion to Nossa Senhora de Copacabana spread beyond Bolivia, reaching the shores of Rio de Janeiro. Bolivian merchants brought a replica of the statue to this vibrant city. A small chapel was built to house her image, nestled between the rocks separating Copacabana beach from Ipanema. In 1746, Bishop Antonio do Desterro, saved from a shipwreck through what he believed to be her intervention, commissioned a larger church on the site. This act of gratitude solidified the name Copacabana for the area, forever linking it to the Virgin. The original Igrejinha de Copacabana, which once stood near the current Forte de Copacabana, met its end in 1908, demolished to make way for the fort. The statue, however, found a temporary home in Petrópolis before returning to Copacabana in 1953, gracing a new church near its original location. Today, Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Copacabana serves as a vibrant center of faith. It reminds us of the power of devotion and the enduring legacy of a humble sculptor who brought the spirit of Copacabana to the world.
