Dreams materialized on Avenida das Américas. Here stands the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple. It is a beacon of faith. This is the eighth temple built in Brazil. It stands proudly in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood.

Imagine the excitement rippling through the community. It was April 6, 2013. Church President Thomas S. Monson announced the temple’s construction. The Rio de Janeiro region had a large number of church members. Previously they traveled 310 miles to the Campinas Brazil Temple. The new temple brought blessings closer to home.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Plans were submitted to the local government in late 2015. Approvals followed. An environmental license was issued in November 2016. Then construction could begin.

March 4, 2017 marked a historic day. The groundbreaking ceremony took place. Elder Claudio R. M. Costa presided. Youth service projects prepared the site. They cleared the land with enthusiasm. Elder Costa declared it a historic day for the Church. He compared Rio’s welcoming spirit to the Christ Statue.

COVID-19 brought unexpected delays. The originally announced open house was retracted. The dedication dates were postponed. The temple sat empty for two years. Finally a new open house was rescheduled.

From March 26 to April 30, 2022, the public was invited. They toured the Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple’s interior. A media open house preceded it. Invited guests followed. Excitement filled the air.

The eve of the dedication was special. Elder Gary E. Stevenson met with the youth. He spoke about the temple. He shared ways to strengthen their faith. Scriptures, family, and friends were mentioned.

May 8, 2022 marked the dedication day. Elder Gary E. Stevenson dedicated the temple. Three dedicatory sessions were held. During the cornerstone ceremony he spoke. He called Christ the cornerstone. He prayed for Brazil’s prosperity.

The Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple is more than a building. It is part of a larger Church complex. It includes a meetinghouse and shared parking. The temple’s design complements the surrounding architecture. It fits well in Barra da Tijuca.

The exterior features Branco Ceará granite. It is quarried in northeastern Brazil. The granite is Brazil’s whitest and most uniform. Other temples also used this stone. The exterior design highlights carved stone. Art Deco arches serve as a motif. A spire rises over 140 feet. It is topped by a statue of the angel Moroni.

The landscape showcases local plants. Palms, flowering trees, and shade trees surround the temple. Interior walkways are made of Brazilian granite. The fountain features Branco Ceará stone. Its spray pattern mirrors the carved stone.

Inside Art Deco chandeliers adorn the rooms. The window panels display shades of blue and gold. The colors evoke the nearby ocean. Geometric Art Deco fountain motifs add elegance.

Native Brazilian Jequitibá hardwoods are used throughout. The recommend desk has metal details. They were inspired by the Historic Bank of São Paulo building. Latter-day Saint artwork decorates the walls. They depict scriptural themes and Brazilian landscapes.

The Rio de Janeiro Brazil Temple stands as a testament. It reflects faith. It is a beacon of hope. It enhances the community.
