Is that a church or a spaceship? Many people ask this question when they first see the Igreja da Santíssima Trindade de Miraflores. This unique building in the Miraflores neighborhood doesn’t look like your typical church. Its unusual, almost rocket-like design is the result of a clash of visions and a whole lot of time. The Igreja da Santíssima Trindade de Miraflores took over a decade to complete. Construction began in the 1950s. However, disagreements between the local priest and the architect, Troufa Real, caused several interruptions. Real envisioned the church’s design as a representation of “the infinite as man’s horizon.” This explains the soaring, upward-reaching structure that seems to defy gravity. It’s a testament to Real’s artistic vision and a bold statement in the world of religious architecture.
