Igreja Batista Itacuruçá has a rich history. It is deeply intertwined with the story of Rio de Janeiro. The church’s name itself tells a tale. It derives from the early 20th-century landowners. The Barão de Itacuruçá’s widow decided to divide the family’s estate. Baptists seized the opportunity. They purchased a large plot. Their vision was to establish educational institutions.
The Igreja Batista Itacuruçá’s story began in 1936. Nine founding members gathered in the Colégio Batista’s Judson Building. They initially named it Igreja Batista de Itacurussá. William E. Allen led this small but determined group. He pastored the church for 26 years. Allen also served as a missionary and seminary professor. His leadership shaped the church’s early identity.
The church has always embraced music. Its choirs are renowned. The Novo Canto and the Masculino are particularly celebrated. They enrich the worship experience. They reflect the church’s commitment to artistic expression.
The sense of community extends beyond its walls. From 1971 to 1990, the Igreja Batista Itacuruçá ran the Clube Jovem. Jacy de Oliveira Curvacho led this ministry. It aimed to support disadvantaged youth in Tijuca. The Clube Jovem provided education, food and spiritual guidance.
Igreja Batista Itacuruçá has a commitment to spreading its message. It founded seven missions. Four of these became independent churches. Others remain connected supporting communities.
The physical church building reflects the congregation’s growth. The idea for a dedicated temple emerged in 1939. The first stone was laid in 1950. Two years later, the temple opened. The congregation numbered 300 at the time.
In 1992, the Igreja Batista Itacuruçá began a tradition. It started hosting public events during Christmas and Easter. These events called “Cantando o Natal” and “Celebrando a Páscoa”. They feature coral and instrumental music. They are a gift to the community.
The Igreja Batista Itacuruçá also uses modern means to connect with people. It broadcasts “Momentos com Cristo” every Sunday morning. This radio program reaches listeners.
