Eighty years of faith and community. That’s the legacy of Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara. Right here in Jacarepaguá, this church has been a cornerstone of the community since 1939. Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the people. The church even takes its name from the square right across the street.
The church’s history is intertwined with the story of Pastor David Malta Nascimento. His 42-year pastorate at Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara was a period of immense growth. Under his leadership, the current sanctuary and religious education building were constructed. He oversaw the establishment of several daughter churches. His impact extended beyond the walls of Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara. He served as rector of the Seminário Teológico Batista do Sul do Brasil, held various denominational positions, and practiced law. A true testament to community involvement.
Pastor Malta’s vision wasn’t limited to spiritual matters. He championed social justice, founding the Diretriz Evangélica movement in the 1950s. This movement addressed social inequalities and encouraged the church’s active role in alleviating suffering and oppression. This legacy continues to inspire Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara’s social outreach programs.
Pastor Carlos Novaes, Pastor Malta’s successor, has continued this tradition for the past 21 years. He speaks of the honor of carrying on Pastor Malta’s work and expanding God’s kingdom through Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara. He credits the harmonious partnership between the pastor and the congregation for the church’s achievements.
Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2019. The festivities included an orchestra and the choir from the Primeira Igreja Batista de Campo Grande. The celebration wasn’t just about marking a milestone. It was about expressing gratitude for God’s grace, honoring past leaders and members, and reaffirming the church’s commitment to the gospel and social impact. Igreja Batista de Barão da Taquara stands as a beacon of hope and service in Rio de Janeiro. It embodies a vibrant faith that embraces both spiritual growth and social responsibility.
