In 1924 fervent prayers echoed not within walls but under the open sky. This was the humble beginning of the Igreja Assembleia de Deus – Belford Roxo. Imagine the small gatherings in homes. The first seeds of faith were sown by brave pioneers like José Cajazeiras and Catarino Varjão. They boldly preached in Dr Francisco de Sá Square. This was unheard of at the time. It caused quite a stir among the townsfolk.
The Igreja Assembleia de Deus – Belford Roxo wasn’t always housed in its current grand building. It started small. Initially services were held outdoors and in the homes of devout believers. One such home belonged to brother Silvino Francisco Quintela. It was located on a street now called Rua Jesus Castor in Areia Branca. After his passing services moved to brother José Soares’ home. It was on Avenida Francisco Sá number 1401. This was in 1926. The church was then under the guidance of brother Silvério de Almeida Campos. He was a respected elder of the congregation.
The church’s growth was phenomenal. The congregation outgrew the home settings. Brother Campos and brother Varjão took a leap of faith. They decided to build a dedicated temple. This was a testament to their unwavering commitment and the burgeoning community’s faith. The inauguration of the first church building took place on November 2 1931. It was a momentous occasion. The renowned missionary Gunnar Vingren was present. The event marked a milestone in the history of the Igreja Assembleia de Deus – Belford Roxo. Pastor Manoel Pereira Leite was installed as the church’s first president.
Today the Igreja Assembleia de Deus – Belford Roxo stands tall. It’s at Avenida José Mariano Passos 1626 in the Centro district. The exterior is undergoing renovations. They’re preparing for the centenary celebrations in 2024. The interior however is breathtaking. The classic architecture remains. Details such as gilded moldings and frescoes are remarkable. They depict a beautiful sky filled with floral designs. These are stunning contrasts to the modern pulpit. The advanced technology for sound and media is also impressive.
The Igreja Assembleia de Deus – Belford Roxo is a place of fervent devotion. It’s a place where faith is expressed openly. Services begin with passionate prayers. There is also the free expression of the Holy Spirit. The speaking in tongues is a noticeable element of the worship. Traditional hymns are central but contemporary worship is incorporated. The church also boasts an orchestra and the historic Coral Jerusalém choir. It’s a church that embraces modernity while upholding its core values. It has a long and vibrant history. It is a testament to faith’s enduring power in Belford Roxo and beyond.
