João Batista Viana Drummond created it in 1872.
The area around Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia Vila Isabel has seen much change. Vila Isabel grew quickly after its founding. Factories brought workers and new housing. However favelas also appeared in the area from 1921. In recent years Vila Isabel has lost population. People have moved due to security concerns and housing costs.
Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia Vila Isabel is part of a larger story. The Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia Central do Rio de Janeiro has a long history. It began with a group meeting in a building on Rua Piauí. This group grew from public conferences held in a tent around 1915. The tent was set up in different areas including Manuel Vitoriano and Doutor Bulhões streets.
The Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia Central do Rio de Janeiro officially started between 1922 and 1923. Some members wanted a group closer to their homes near the city center. With support from pastor Henry J Meyer they began meeting on Rua Senador Furtado. The group stayed there for about two years. In 1924 the group moved to a building on Rua Maia Lacerda. The Igreja Central grew there for 13 years. It reached 250 to 300 members.
Due to growth the Igreja Central needed larger facilities. It bought land on Rua do Matoso. The new church opened on March 27 1937. During the move the church met for a few months on Rua Hadock Lobo. The Rua do Matoso building was designed with specific goals. It needed a sanctuary for 400 people. It also needed space for church departments a primary school and the Missão Rio-Minas headquarters.
The Igreja Central stayed on Rua do Matoso for 39 years. It was renovated to meet growing needs. Eventually the building became outdated. Due to the construction of the Metrô the church had to move. In 1976 it moved to its current location. For four years the church functioned with limited comfort. A new temple was inaugurated on July 4 1980. It could hold about 1000 people.
Dr Dalmo Klein designed and built the current church building. Pastor Eduardo Pereira coordinated the project. Pastors João Isidio da Costa and Max Fuhrmann also supported the construction. The Igreja Central has seen many changes. It has moved and rebuilt several times.
The Igreja Central has also been involved in starting new congregations. In 1943 a group in the south zone formed the Igreja de Botafogo. In 1958 employees of Hospital Silvestre formed the Igreja de Santa Teresa. In 1968 meetings in Saúde led to the group at Ladeira do Barroso. In 1968 a campaign in Vila Isabel led to the Igreja de Vila Isabel.
