Imagine standing in front of the ruins of the iglesia Veracruz, in the heart of León, Nicaragua. This is where the history of León began, with its roots firmly planted in the indigenous Sutiaba culture long before Spanish colonization. It was built between 1524 and 1600 with humble materials at first, but was later rebuilt with stone and lime. When León moved to its present location, the iglesia Veracruz became the city’s first cathedral until 1622.
