Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro

Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Buenos Aires, stands the Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. A beacon of faith and resilience, its story unfolds like a whispered prayer through time. The Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro’s history began long before its stones were laid. It started with the arrival of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Buenos Aires on May 22, 1901. Led by the determined Sister Maria Amada de la Cruz, they embarked on a mission to establish a place of worship and education. Their vision began to materialize in October 1909, when the cornerstone of the future school and chapel was blessed by Monsignor José Orzali. Years later, on May 30, 1912, the Superior of the Redemptorist Fathers blessed the cornerstone of the new temple dedicated to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro slowly rose, brick by brick, a testament to their unwavering dedication. A poignant chapter in the church’s history was written on May 30, 1922. The remains of Dr. Carlos Luna and his wife, Armenia Camelino Vedoya de Luna, were moved to a vault in the church’s crypt. Their generous donations played a significant role in the church’s construction, forever linking their names to the Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. The church bells, named “Trinidad, Francisca, and Maria Julia”, were consecrated by Monsignor Fortunato Devoto on March 15, 1925. Their melodic chimes would soon call the faithful to prayer within the completed church. The grand inauguration finally arrived on July 6, 1928. Monsignor Santiago Luis Copello led the solemn blessing of the church and consecrated the main altar. The following days were filled with sacred ceremonies, including a general communion mass celebrated by Monsignor José María Bottaro and a pontifical mass officiated by Monsignor Fortunato Devoto. Monsignor Nicolás Fasolino delivered a powerful sermon, and the Apostolic Nuncio, Monsignor Felipe Cortesi, blessed the images within the newly consecrated Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. The Iglesia Señora del Perpetuo Socorro stands not merely as a structure of brick and mortar. It stands as a symbol of unwavering faith, generous contributions, and dedicated leadership.
