Can a single rose bloom in the dead of winter? Here at the Iglesia Santa Rita de Casia, such miracles seem almost commonplace. This church, nestled in the heart of Buenos Aires, isn’t just a building of brick and mortar. It’s a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring power of hope. The Iglesia Santa Rita de Casia was founded on October 7, 1930. It began its life humbly, in a single room of the Alma Mater institution. This small space served as the parish’s home until the inauguration of the new church on October 22, 1933. The very land the church stands on has its own story. It was originally intended for a school named after St. Thomas Aquinas. However, the devotion to Santa Rita in the area was so strong that the plans changed. The current church building, designed by architect Juan B. Negri, was inaugurated on October 23, 1943. Santa Rita herself is known as the saint of impossible causes. Her life was a tapestry of trials and tribulations. She was a devoted daughter, a faithful wife who endured an abusive marriage, a loving mother, and ultimately, a nun who bore the stigmata. Even in the darkest hours, she never lost her faith. One story tells of Santa Rita receiving a rose and a fig from her childhood garden in Roccaporena in the middle of winter, a sign from God that her sons, who had died after avenging their father’s murder, were with him in heaven. Inside the Iglesia Santa Rita de Casia, you’ll find the “Camarín de Santa Rita,” a space behind the altar built in the late 1960s. Adorned with works by Elio Vitali and a wooden carving of Santa Rita, this space holds the countless plaques of gratitude left by pilgrims from around the world. These testimonies speak to the unwavering belief in Santa Rita’s ability to intercede in even the most difficult situations. The Iglesia Santa Rita de Casia was even designated a Holy Door of Mercy during the Jubilee Year of Mercy in 2016. This designation further solidifies its role as a beacon of hope and a place of solace for all who seek it.
