Gazing up at the Iglesia San Rafael, can you sense the echoes of a century of faith and change? This unassuming church, nestled in the heart of Colonia San Rafael in Mexico City, holds within its walls a story as intricate and layered as the surrounding neighborhood. The Iglesia San Rafael stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this vibrant community. Originally founded by Spanish Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos in about 1910, the church was more than just a place of worship. It represented a connection to their homeland and a beacon of faith in a new land. Sadly, this original structure was demolished by parishioners shortly after the Mexican Revolution. In its place, a new Neo-Gothic temple began construction in 1921, designed by Catalan architect José Verdager and built by Enrique Monet. However, financial constraints delayed the completion of its intricate Neo-Gothic facade. For nearly two decades, the Iglesia San Rafael stood starkly with a temporary wooden facade, until finally in 1943, the striking facade we see today was unveiled. It was designed by the architect Salvador Roncal y Gómez Palacio, a student of renowned architect José Villagrán García. The statue of Archangel Rafael, poised atop the pointed arches, radiates a unique energy. It’s a blend of Neo-Gothic and modern aesthetics, a testament to the evolving architectural landscape of Mexico City. The church’s dedication was later expanded to include Saint Benedict Abbot, founder of the Benedictine Order, further solidifying its ties to its monastic roots. The Iglesia San Rafael has witnessed the transformation of Colonia San Rafael, from an exclusive enclave of wealthy families in the late 19th century, known as Colonia Arquitectos, to the bustling, diverse neighborhood it is today. The church has remained a constant throughout these shifts, offering solace and a sense of continuity to generations of residents.
