Could a confession change the course of history? Here at the Iglesia San José de Flores, it did. This basilica, a cornerstone of the Flores neighborhood in Buenos Aires, holds a secret whispered among its faithful. It was within these very walls that a young Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, found his calling. He confessed here, in this very church, and decided to dedicate his life to the priesthood. Today, a simple plaque marks the confessional, a testament to a pivotal moment in history. The Iglesia San José de Flores has stood witness to the growth of Buenos Aires since the early 19th century. The original structure, a humble mix of adobe, wood, and straw, was built in 1806 thanks to a land donation from the Flores family. Funds for a more permanent structure were collected by Father Miguel García, even receiving a donation of 12,000 bricks from Ramón Francisco Flores himself. Construction began in 1810 but was repeatedly halted due to lack of funds. The current basilica, a grand testament to faith and community, replaced an earlier church that was deemed too small. The cornerstone for this magnificent building was laid in 1879, designed by Italian architects Benito Panunzi and Emilio Lombardo. Construction, led by architects Andrés Simonazzi and Tomás Allegrini, took just under four years. The grand inauguration took place on February 18, 1883, solidifying the church’s place in the heart of Flores. The church’s importance grew further in 1912 when Pope Pius X designated it a minor basilica. Under the guidance of Father Daniel Figueroa, the basilica received exquisite decorations, including the image of Saint Columba and relics from Agnani, Italy. Years later, in 1956, the image of San José presiding over the main altar was granted a pontifical coronation by Pope Pius XII. A special chamber for San José and a baptistery were also inaugurated during this time. Today, the Iglesia San José de Flores stands as more than just a beautiful building. It is a vibrant center of faith, a symbol of community, and a testament to a confession that changed the world.
