Iglesia San Felipe Apóstol stands proudly in the northern part of León’s historic center. Its impressive size makes it easily recognizable. The church’s history began in 1685. It was built as a place of worship for the Black and Mulatto population. They lived in the neighborhood of the same name.
In 1859, Iglesia San Felipe underwent reconstruction. It adopted a Neoclassical style. A bell tower graced the front. It was a smaller version of one of León Cathedral’s towers. Sadly, an earthquake in 1885 destroyed the tower. The earthquake also toppled statues of the twelve apostles. They had adorned the cornices. Repairs to the front and the construction of the current spire occurred in 1983.
Iglesia San Felipe holds immense heritage value. This is true not only for León but for all of Nicaragua. Its courtyard witnessed a pivotal moment. On December 7, 1857, Monseñor Gordiano Carranza first cried out, “Quién causa tanta alegría?” This translates to “Who causes so much joy?” He urged the people of León to visit altars in every house. They were to repeat the cry and await the response. The response was “La Concepción de María!” meaning “The Conception of Mary!” This transformed a celebration held in churches or private homes. It became a massive street party. The whole city rejoiced together. This is how “La Gritería” was born. It spread to other major Nicaraguan cities. Nicaraguans abroad also celebrate it.
The processions of Iglesia San Felipe are famous. They are especially known during patron saint celebrations and Holy Week. They are considered some of the most splendid in Nicaragua. León excels in this regard.
The procession of the Seńor de la Reseńa is iconic. It takes place during León’s Holy Week. Every Monday morning, Iglesia San Felipe is adorned. It carries the “Seńor de la Reseńa”. This is an ancient sculpture from Guatemala. This tradition began in 1867. Monseñor Gordiano Carranza made a promise to save León from a cholera plague. The plague had already killed many people in León. The miracle occurred. Since then, this solemn procession of penance takes place every Holy Monday.
In 2008, Iglesia San Felipe was declared a National Historical and Cultural Heritage Site. This recognition acknowledges its importance to Nicaragua. The Iglesia San Felipe stands as a symbol of faith and community. It is a treasure for generations to come.
